Sock update

I managed to squeeeeeeeze another sock out of my leftover cashmerino. It was a real squeeze, the last row of grey has a join in the middle of the row (very naughty) but it was either that or I couldn't have finished it. I just need to hope I have enough stray bits to finish sewing up the top. Photos of the completed set will be up next week.

Debbie Bliss Baby Set

I am in the throes of sewing up the Debbie Bliss baby outfit I have knitted for a friend whose baby is due in February. So far I have completed the trousers and hat above. I have knitted one sock but need to check that I have enough yarn to finish the borders on the jacket before I try and squeeze another sock out of the yarn that is left.

I've just been to the Post Office today to pick up my parcel from Get Knitted. I had ordered some Addi lace Turbo's and some DPN's to start my stole from the lovely Megan who spoiled me in SP11. Looking forward to getting started next week. Watch this space for updates.

SP11 Package

I picked up my package from the PO today. Megan has been spoiling me in this round and she used the wedding rhyme "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" as my theme since I am getting married next year. I even took a photo of all the surprises before unwrapping them as the wrapping was beautiful.

My something blue and old were some gorgeous stitch markers handmade in sterling silver and vintage blue beads with the cutest wedding cake charm. I don't think it has come out very clearly in the pictures but its lovely.

My something borrowed was a family recipe for bowl cake which sounds delicious - I think I'll try it as a pudding for christmas dinner this year.

The something new was gorgeous schaefer silk lace yarn, beads and a pattern to make a stole for my wedding day. The colours are gorgeous and I have placed a swatch of my wedding dress on top and it goes perfectly! I've no idea if Megan knew that I wasn't going for the traditional ivory or white gown as I don't think I blogged about it. I had been thinking of knitting something like this to be able to pass on as an heirloom but hadn't got round to doing anything about it so thanks Megan its given me the inspiration that I needed. The photo shows the peach shade as being very orange (which it isn't in real life) - it all matches perfectly with my dress swatch.

I also received a wedding magazine, some big day bath salts (which made the whole package smell amazing) and a heart shaped soap.

I completely love the whole parcel and want to start the stole straight away.

Thanks again Megan, the parcel was excellent and I feel truly spoiled.

Looking through my knitting bag last night after finishing the insert for my Sorrell jumper, guess what I found?

Yip, a nearly full ball of the Tapestry yarn. Heaven knows why I didn't think of looking there before I bought another ball. Oh well, seems like I will need to do those wristwarmers after all - or maybe I'll do a beret.

New Project

I went to my LYS today to get another ball of Tapestry to finish my Sorrell jumper - I am only going to need a few grams so it was quite infuriating having to buy another ball but I think I will use the remainder to make some wrist warmers.

While there, I also bought 2 Debbie Bliss baby books - I love her patterns and yarns. My friend from college is expecting a baby in February so I thought I would make the crossover top and pants from the Essential Baby Book and also the stripey hat and socks to match. I've gone for a teal and light grey colourway as I don't know whether its a boy or girl. The top will be in the light grey and the pants in the teal.

I had thought about doing another baby blanket but I'm just sick of doing baby blankets at the moment. At least an outfit will be something a bit different.

We found out over the weekend that my Mum has cancer in both her kidneys. It was quite a shock but one that I had had in the back of my mind for quite some time. We are still waiting on full prognosis at the moment but we decided to cancel the trip to Peru as my parents just need me around at the moment. The care they have recieved so far has been next to useless and so I have been phoning her GP to try and get some care in place - it looks like he has finally decided to do something today as she has got progressively worse in the last couple of days. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he does engage the nurses and home help that he promised on Monday but so far hadn't done anything about.

I've been next to useless at doing any work, knitting, housework etc this week although I have been making some inroads into our wine collection - not the healthiest thing to do but a couple of glasses at night seems to help with sleeping.

I have been working on the collar of my Sorrell jumper and it is taking forever - I've still got 18 rows to go before I finish the collar and then need to do the insert. I am sure that I am going to run out of yarn too. The collar is an uphill struggle just due to the large number of stitches so I am commiting myself to trying to do at least 2 rows per night so at this rate I'll be finished the collar in just over a week's time.

Trip to London

We visited London at the weekend to see James' brother and girlfriend who moved there over a year ago and this was our first trip down to see them. Feeling so tired today as we had a long walk on Saturday from the BA eye down to Tower Bridge and across to St Katherines Dock and then back again. Visited Brick Lane market on Sunday and even managed to walk past the yarn stall without buying anything!

Since we travelled by train, I managed to finally get the heels turned on my socks and am now going to leave the rest of this project on hold so that I can take it to Peru and finish them while we complete the Inca trail.

Royal Mail Grumble

Don't you just hate Royal Mail? I've got my 2nd SP parcel all ready to send - decided on an indulgence theme for this one - and now Royal Mail have announced a strike from Thursday until Tuesday. My poor SP is just going to have to wait another week or so for this one as I don't trust sending it and then find that its got lost in the backlog.

Gone back to my sorrell jumper. Picked up a massive 226 stitches for the neck - it seemed to take forever. Happily knitting away at it again. I always seem to stall on projects when I get to a part that requires a bit more concentration or time and then when its over and done, I happily get on with it - weird isn't it?

Anyway, not had a great deal of time for knitting, what with trying to arrange wedding and now my Dad being taken into hospital unexpectedly with my Mum going for her op on 11th October. I seem to be carrying my project bag of socks everywhere and not getting anything done.

I'm back up at Glasgow this weekend. The hope is that my Dad gets released from hospital, but if not then I'll bring my Mum back to stay with me for the week. My aunt is living with her at the moment and I think tempers are beginning to fray on both sides so its probably best if she comes and annoys me (joking) for a week and gives my aunt some rest.

I AM going to start sewing the border to my baby blanket - I really need to be quite strict and make myself do the sewing up jobs otherwise I end up with bits of knitting everywhere and no finished items. The border looks far longer than it needs to be and since I still haven't blocked the blanket, I'll need to stretch it as I sew it on (as you might have guessed, I am a reallllllly lazy finisher).

I thought that the blanket would have made a dent in my stash but I still have over 600gms left of this baby cashmerino! It was a bargain from Coldspring Mills but I think it'll be going back in the stash cupboard for a while as I am sick looking at it.

My Friend's wedding

This is me (and hubby to be) at my friend's wedding. We are both looking very dapper as James was best man and I was bridesmaid. The dresses were made by a local dressmaker and I have to say the quality was awful I know that being an experienced dressmaker, I can be over critical, but honestly I have never seen such a bad example of workmanship from a supposed professional. The dresses only got delivered at 10pm the night before the wedding and none of them fitted and they were so badly made that it would have been a start again job if I had to try and do anything with them. We improvised by sewing them to our bras and using tit tape to keep them up!!

Thankfully they were functional enough for an hour or so for the ceremony and photos before we all changed into our own more comfortable and fitting clothes for the rest of the day. It was a shame because they could have been really nice.

At least I know not to use this dressmaker for my bridesmaid dresses.

I've gone back to my Sorrell jumper from Rowan in Tapestry. I frogged the sleeves back last night and have started the sleeve top shaping. Might manage to get it finished for this winter!

I always take knitting everywhere I go... Depends what kind of holiday, but probably some socks as they are very portable

I did Egypt a few years ago and was bowled over by The Valley of the Kings. Another favourite place is Thailand as the people are so friendly.
4. What is your favorite knitting book at the moment? Do you own it?
I don't tend to buy knitting books as I like to buy patterns as and when I need them. Saying that, I would love some books on lace knitting.

I listen to Cast-On very occasionally - I never seem to have enough hours in th eday to casually listen to my i-Pod.

Baby Blanket update

I have finished the main part of my Debbie Bliss Entrelac baby blanket. It's not yet blocked, hence the wavy edges. I've got about 14 border patterns still to do before I am able to attach it.

Been up to Glasgow at the weekend and had a very successful wedding shopping trip. Managed to find my dress (not yet ordered as I can't decide on colour) but will be ordering on Saturday. Also managed to buy a flower girl dress in the sale at John Lewis which just needs the ribbon replacing and a bit of extra net to make it perfect AND also got the idea for my invites. Planning to have a pencil sketch of Alnwick Castle (decided on venue and therefore date - 10th May next year) on the front of my invites and since my father-in-law-to-be was an art teacher, he has very kindly agreed to draw me some samples.

Lots of news

I haven't blogged for a while and there has been a good reason for this - my boyfriend finally proposed! It happened about 3 weeks ago and we have been caught up in a whirlwind ever since, trying to let friends and family know and looking at venues for a wedding next year. We have narrowed it down to 2 venues (both with Harry Potter themes - although that wasn't deliberate). The venue is either going to be Alnwick Castle (where the scenes of the Great Hall were filmed) or Glenfinnan House Hotel which is near the Glenfinnan viaduct which is where the Hogwarts express travels over. Alnwick is looking likely to be favourite as it is closer to home and logistically an easier place to get everyone to stay over. Going to see Glenfinnan House hotel this weekend which has a stunning location and which I love but fear its not going to be right. Will keep you posted.

On the knitting side of things, I have managed to finish the main part of my entrelac baby blanket although I got a bit confused on the last corners (they turned out smaller than the start corners but I followed the pattern and think its a quirk of finishing off he entrelac). I'm now onto the border and have abother 14 pattern repeats before it is finished. This wasn't planned for anyone in particular, I just like having a stash of baby thiings to give to friends and family when the new arrivals are born. So once this is finished, it'll be joining some others bits and bobs in my baby stash.

I like most natural fibres, love anything by Noro as the colour changes keep me interested. I also love anything that feels silky smooth and soft like alpaca. Don't like Chenille as I had a bad experience with it many moons ago where the fluffy bits had fallen off and all I was left with was a bald thread.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
a very full and very large knitting needle fabric holder.

SP10 Reveal

Ruth has been spoiling me in SP10 and my last parcel was no exception. It had a turquoise theme and practically everything was blue - its just as well that this is one of my favourite colours. I got some gorgeous pale blue laceweight merino which I think will become a wrap or scarf once I find a pattern a like - suggestions welcome!

I also got some lorna's laces in a blue colourway which I love knitting with, a fantastic ball winder which I have wanted for absolutely ages. On the treats side, I got 2 bars of Green and Black's organic chocolate and a recipe book - the recipes are to die for. Can't wait to try some of these out. Some beautiful handmade stitch markers and lots of other treats.

Glastonbury Project

As previously mentioned, I didn't get to do as much kniting at Glastonbury as I hoped but here is the progress so far on my socks. This is the straight laced pattern from Knitty and I am using Koigu that my SP from SP10 sent me. Its the first time I have tried knitting 2 socks at once using the 2 circular needles method. It seems to be going ok so far and at least I will banish the second sock syndrome by doing it this way.

Back from Glastonbury

Just arrived back from Glastonbury at 10am yesterday morning. We left after watching The Who on Sunday night as the camper van field was looking so bogged down that we thought we would never get out. We had to wait for a tractor to tow us out as the ground was so muddy but eventually got on our way about 2am. The weather was terrible all weekend - cold and wet which made the whole site very muddy. As a result, I didn't get to do half the things I wanted to as it took so long to walk between different areas. Maybe some year it will be bright sunshine at Glastonbury or is it just an urban myth that the festival can sometimes have good weather. The weather also meant that I didn't manage to get much knitting done as my hands were normally too preoccupied with trying to hold my umbrella so that I stayed dry. I did manage to get a little done before Shirley Bassey appeared on stage and also managed to do some on the journey down. This is me during a brief dry spell at the Pyramid stage waiting on the Bassey to arrive on stage.

Another Project

I've just started Straight Laced socks from Knitty with the Koigu that my SP sent for my first parcel in SP10. This is a takeaway project for when I am at Glastonbury. I've decided to try knitting both socks at the same time on 2 circulars to avoid the dreaded 2nd sock syndrome. I've just finished the rib and done a couple of rows of pattern to get me started. Debbie Bliss Entrelac baby blanket

Decided that I wasn't in the mood to frog back the sleeves just yet and didn't feel like finishing my socks either (which I haven't picked up in ages - think its because I know I will need to concentrate on two patterns at the one time and just don't feel ready to do that yet) so I have decided to start yet another project.

I bought a huge cone of Debbie Bliss baby cashmerino at Coldspring Mills a couple of years back when they were doing the 1p per gram promotion. Have used this to start the entrelac baby blanket by Debbie Bliss. I've never tried entrelac before and its a bit strange working on seperate bits of the blanket all the time. I wasn't sure it was going right as the pictures in the book don't show the full blanket but it seems to be working out ok. It's an easy to get used to pattern, bit of moss stitch and the odd cable - just what I need right now.

Sorrell Jumper

I thought that my sleeves of the Sorrell jumper was taking ages to knit and that I was using up all the wool I had left. Since the sleeves seemed a bit stretchy, I decided to wet one of them and see what the outcome was. As you can see from the picture, there is a huge difference in length - means I will need to frog back quite a bit but at least I know I will have enough yarn left to finish it now.

Finished Lizard Ridge Afghan

At last I can now say I have totally finished my Lizard Ridge Afghan. I sewed the final few ends in last night and then washed and blocked it. I really love it and its so warm and cosy. Everyone should make one of these.

SP Package

I received a dyeing kit from my SP on Saturday.I've never tried dyeing before but always wanted to have a go so this parcel was a fantastic surprise. I got some Kool Aid sachets, 4 ply and DK wool, a pretty notebook to write all my pattern adjustments in, lots of sweets (all the old ones that you remember from your childhood like parma violets which were my favourites) and some Hipknits Cashmere sock yarn in case the dye project doesn't go to plan.

I'm looking forward to giving the dyeing a go and creating my own colourways. Thanks again SP.

Lizard Ridge Border

I received my crochet hook from getknitted.com on Saturday so I've been able to start the border on my Afghan. I've completed two sides so far and the crochet has come back easier than I expected. I've got a few ends to sew in after that and then I'm finished.

I've now decided on turquoise for the border of my Lizard Ridge Afghan. I ordered the yarn last week from Get Knitted and have now received it but haven't had a chance to start yet. We started to decorate the dining room this weekend so there hasn't been a great deal of knitting time. I reckon its going to take us about a month to 6 weeks to finish as we have so many things going on at weekends at the moment. Managed to get all the wallpaper stripped and paint the ceiling at the weekend. Planning to paint all the woodwork next weekend and then start on the wallpapering in a couple of weeks.

In the meantime, I have neglected my Sorrell jumper and so have picked that up again. I've now finished the front and have started on the sleeves.

I usually pack socks to knit when I am on holiday as they are small and easilt transportable.

2) What do you hope to shop for?
I normally find space is limited when I travel and so I've never bought any yarn when I have been on holiday - it hasn't stopped me looking though.

Where would you go on a "knitting holiday"?
I would go to the US - they seem to have such a better selection of yarn than the UK - or maybe its just that it is different to what we get here.

Bank Holiday weekend

Been at the beach for most of the weekend as boyfriend wanted to fly his kite. I did take some knitting with me but I've just turned the heel on my sock and needed to start the leg pattern which would have meant sitting and studying the pattern for about 10 minutes - so needless to say the knitting never made it out the bag. Need to get another easy project on the go for these beach trips.

I'm still sewing up the Lizard Ridge Afghan. Got another 3 panels to put together and then need to sew the 2 bottom quarters together and then the top and bottom half together. Have given up on sewing in the ends as I go along and have decided that I'll just have a sewing in ends evening once it's all together (not sure if this is a good idea or not but its the one that I am following at the moment). Will post pictures later in the week when it should hopefully be all in one piece.

Decorating Nightmares

Have been painting the new downstairs toilet today in preparation for the tiler coming tomorrow. Somehow I managed to drop the pot of paint I was holding - its just as well we need a new hall carpet. Thankfully the paint was emulsion and I managed to get most of it off. Too traumatised to do anymore in case I do something even worse so I'm off to peacefuly sew up some more squares of my blanket.

Skinny Scarf

My boyfriend's Mum bought me some yarn called Zip for my birthday. Its a ladder yarn in black with different shades of pink. I have been using 10mm needles to make it into a skinny scarf. Now that I have finished knitting my lizard afghan panels, I needed a nice easy project to complete while I was watching TV and this fits the bill perfectly.

Finishing

I've just started to sew up my Lizard Ridge Afghan. Originally I had thought about buying some bland coloured double knitting wool to sew up with but so far I have been using the Noro and its coming out ok. I've only put the first 3 squares together and I haven't yet blocked any pieces. I think I will wait until I get a few of them sewn together before I block the larger pieces prior to putting it all together. The hardest part has been trying to work out the combination of the squares. I spent about an hour rearranging all the squares so that it would look ok. I think I am happy with the arrangement now - just hope I don't lose my numbered stickers from each square or I'll be back to step 1.

Its my birthday today and so far I am having a really good one. The weather is fantastic; my boyfriend got me some fab presents (and he is taking me out tonight - its a surprise but I think we are dining and staying over at a hotel just down the road from us called Jesmond Dene House. I've been desperate to go for ages); and I got home from work to find a parcel from my SP.

After opening the envelope, the gifts inside were neatly wrapped in blue tissue paper - and she remembered my birthday and sent a birthday card. I love SP's. Anyway, I got the Knitting Rules book by Stephanie Pearl McPhee which I immediately had a quick flick through - ok, I confess, I've been reading it for the last half hour. Although I have been knitting for years, I have never been adventurous enough to try my own patterns or stray from original patterns. From my initial readings of this book then I think that may change very soon.

I also got some Koigu wool sock and the cutest sock project bag. I've used Koigu before to knit a baby blanket and its such an easy yarn to knit with - so smooth and the colours are fantastic. I'm definitely going to enjoy making some socks from this.

So thanks SP, I thoroughly enjoyed my parcel and love every bit of it.

Glastonbury here we come

Been up since really early this morning trying to get tickets for Glastonbury. We had no luck in getting through on the websites but fortunately one of our friends managed to get through and buy our tickets. Its been a military operation but all been worthwhile. Just trying to book a camper van now - we like our luxuries!

On the knitting front, I'm down to my second last panel on the Lizard Ridge Afghan so hoping to have all the knitting finished this week and then I can start the mammoth task of sewing it all together.

It's a miracle - I haven't thought about knitting at all last week. I've just got back from a week ski-ing in La Plagne in France and we did so much ski-ing and I was so exhausted that I haven't thought about knitting once. I got back home last night and although my knitting was sitting looking at me, I just didn't have the energy to pick it up. Back to work today and then got the washing and food shopping to contend with this evening so I think it'll be a few days yet before I get back to my knitting.

I'm waiting on the last 2 balls of Kureyon arriving from Knitting Garden to finish off my Afghan lizard panels.

One of the ladies at my knitting club was making these and I thought they would make the perfect present for my friend's 30th birthday. I made them in dark pink as it is her favourite colour. She loved them and couldn't believe I had made them. I found the kidsilk haze quite fiddly to knit with on 4 circulars but the end result is so effective that I want to make a pair for myself now.

I am nearing the end of my Lizard Ridge Afghan. I have had a bit of a break as I couldn't find any more colourways of Noro in the UK so I've been waiting on some new colourways coming from the States. I've only got 4 panels left to do and then it's the dreaded job of sewing it all together which is going to take ages - I'm sure it'll all be worth it in the end.

I've realised how much I have enjoyed doing these panels since taking a break. I find them really relaxing to knit since I now know the pattern off by heart.

I like most natural fibres, love anything by Noro as the colour changes keep me interested. I also love anything that feels silky smooth and soft like alpaca. Don't like Chenille as I had a bad experience with it many moons ago where the fluffy bits had fallen off and all I was left with was a bald thread.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
a very full and very large knitting needle fabric holder.

Sock update

I think I have finally cracked how to use my camera to take better shots. Its got so many different settings that I normally use the point and shoot auto focus, auto flash etc and hope that it turns out ok. Anyway, this time I tried to use a different setting and things have become a bit clearer.

I've done some more of my leaf and tendril sock using the Lorna's Laces that Glenda sent. I can start to see the leaf pattern emerge. The pattern has a huge 47 lines in it and I'm on row 30 so about 2/3rds of the way through the first pattern. You can see the pattern more clearly in real life but at least this photo is a huge improvement on the previous one.

SP9 last parcel and reveal

I got my last parcel from my SP today and it was another fab one.

My SP (Glenda) has actually been really devious - she used to live in Canada and had been sending my previous parcels from there but she has since moved back to Newcastle (where I live) and sent my last parcel from here. Glenda said it was really difficult not letting on that she lived a few miles away. I thought it was a brilliant ruse when I opened my last parcel today - I can't believe my SP has been living a few miles away. I plan to try and meet up at one of the local knitting groups very soon.

Anyway, in my last parcel, Glenda sent me some fab things as per usual. I had wanted to try some beaded knitting as its not something that I've done in the past. Glenda sent me a scarf pattern, with wome wool and beads and a handy little device to thread the wool onto the needles. I'll be giving this a go once I've finished my socks using the Lorna;s Laces that Glenda sent me in my first parcel. I also got some little sachets of wool wash which will come in handy for washing all my new knits.

Glenda also sent me some non-knitting treats, I got flavoured t-bags, chocolate bunnies, some shower gel and a bath cupcake.

The best surprise this time though was light up knitting needles. I've never seen anything like these before. I haven't opened them yet but I can't think of a better idea. Basically the points of the needles light up so you can knit in the dark - I think its a fantastic idea and means I'll be able to keep knitting whenever we watch films at home.

Thanks Glenda and can't wait to meet up. It'll be great to have a proper gossip with you rather then trying to fit a conversation into an email.

SP9 Treat

This one is just for my SP. She sent me some fab Lorna's Laces which I have just started to make into the leaf and tendril socks from "Socks soar on 2 circular needles".

I haven't done enough of the pattern yet to see whether it is going to be lost in this yarn (I've had to rip it out a couple of times as I made a few mistakes on the pattern - too eager to get started as per usual and didn't read the pattern properly). Also, I couldn't get a close up picture, either the flash went off and all I got was white light or it was so dark that you couldn't see the sock. Just as well my knitting is better than my photography skills.

Anyway, the colourway is yummy and it has been my first attempt at an invisible cast on toe up sock - impressive! I couldn't get my head round how this would work when I read the pattern but it made perfect sense once I started. The toe looks very small and triangle like at the moment - in fact it looks like a tiny pair of bikini bottoms - but I have stretched it over my toes and it seems to fit so might just need a bit of blocking once done.

Its been so long

sorry everyone, been rubbishing at posting recently. Job has taken over at the moment. I'm trying to learn lots of new admin procedures, put into effect the formal training I have been given and see customers at the same time. Its all proving to be very hectic and at the moment I seem to be working 12 hour days.

I have managed to get some knitting done though. I've finished a pair of socks from "Socks soar on two circular needles". This is the first time I have used circulars for socks and I have found my tension is much better and its less fiddly (well it is after you've managed a couple of cm of ribbing). The socks do look a bit different in colour. I can't remember what yarn this was but it was 2 separate balls which were the same dyelot so not quite sure why they look so different. Never mind, as long as they are warm and comfy, I don't care.

I'm waiting on some more Kureyon colourways to be delivered so that I can get on with my Lizard Ridge Afghan. I still have 9 squares to do but have been reduced to using up some of the odds and ends from my previous squares as I am fast running out of different colourways. Hoping that Noro will release some new ones soon and that I receive the 2 balls I currently have on order from the internet.

Kitchen Photos

Well the parcels are all wrapped and I have just finished baking tomorrow's desserts - maple and pecan pie and sticky toffee pudding.

Thought I would post some pictures of the kitchen. Its nearly finished. The worktops need to be replaced in the New Year as they have cut the sink shape wrong but at least I can get on with some cooking now. We just need to tile and paint in the New Year to finally finish it all off.

2nd SP Parcel

I received my 2nd parcel from my SP a couple of days ago - just in time for Christmas. It was full of winter goodies to keep me warm and some knitting stuff of course.

I got some mulled wine spice, slippers, a christmas pencil and snowman bar of soap and on the knitting side, I got some knit klips and some curly holders to keep my needles together. Once again, another fabulous and well thought out gift as I love everything.

The slippers are just what I needed, the correct size and soooooo comfortable.

The mulled wine spice is going to be put to good use tonight as we always have a Christmas Eve soiree with mulled wine and mince pies for friends and family.

Can't wait to use the knit klips on my next sewing up project. I had been using some small hair clips from Accesorize but they were just too small and kept breaking. I have been thinking of buying knit klips for quite some time so thank you SP.

The soap has given the new downstairs loo a nice festive touch - it desperately needed something to brighten it up as we haven't got round to tiling it yet. Another job for the new year.

Kitchen Update

My kitchen and extension is nearly finished. Worktops are coming tomorrow as is the electrician to fix all the sockets that aren't working. Fridge Freezer is delivered on Saturday. Tiler is in at the moment (only tiling the floor just now, the walls can wait until after Christmas). I'm in the throes of trying to get the house back into some kind of order - not easy.

As a result, knitting has gone down the pan although I have finally finished my Glee cardigan. Photos will be posted soon.

Weird Gifts

1) the oddest gift you have ever received (not asked for)
a pringle golf jumper - from my flatmate at the time. I didn't play golf, the jumper was awful with a lady golfer on the front. He was gay, he should have had style, what was he thinking?

2) the oddest gift you ever asked for
my parents bought me a fishing game when I was 20. I was a student at the time and it was a game my flatmates and I used to play before heading to the pub. It was hilarious but guess you needed to be there.

3) the oddest gift you ever gave
the whole back catalogue of James Patterson books - I didn't know what to get my boyfriend for his birthday and since he had read a couple of these books, I bought every one that James Patterson wrote. My boyfriend thought I was mad!

4) the worse gift you ever got
a pasta pot from an ex- boyfriend. It was a very nice pasta pot but not exactly what you would expect your boyfriend to buy you for christmas.

Just received my first SP parcel and I love it. My SP sent me some Lorna's Laces which I have been wanting to try for some time. I have the leaf and tendril sock pattern from "Socks Soar on two Circular Needles" in mind for these. I adore the colourway which is pinks, blues and beige.

My SP also sent me some bath confetti, a pack of brightly coloured tissues and some scrumptious lip balm which tastes of chocolate. The lip balm doesn't stay on very long as I am always licking it off.

Christmas Shopping

Made a start on my Christmas shopping today. Glad that I have decided not to make anything for anyone this year as my knitting time is few and far between at the moment with the new job and the kitchen extension that is being built at the moment. Going out most nights for something to eat so have very little knitting time in the evenings.

Managed to get quite a bit of Xmas shopping though. I'm off on another course for work for 2 weeks and will only be home briefly in the weekend in between and then have a couple of weekends away once that is finished so really needed to at least make some dent in the christmas shopping.

Update on WIP's

Have managed to get past the armholes on the back of Sorrell - see picture above. This is going to take me a long time to finish as I can only do about 10 rows before the slippiness of the wool gets me really annoyed. I think I will only use Tapestry for small projects next time - its not something that I really like working with long term.

Have now sewn up one side of the kim Hargreaves "Glee" cardigan. It really has shrunk quite a bit in the wash so I'm hoping it still fits when its all sewn up.

Got my first parcel off to my SP and she sent a response back saying she loves it. I got her some hand spun Alpaca from www.alpaca-spinner.com. It came from Natasha and was a lovely camel colour. I love the quirky service from Alpaca Spinners - they give you a certificate and picture of the llama that your wool comes from - its a fantastic gift for a knitter. I got 2 hanks so that she could make a scarf. I'm quite tempted to buy some myself but need to fonosh off some of my other projects first.

I've made a start on Sorrel in Tapestry from Rowan. Its been going very slowly since I've really abandoned it to do the lizard ridge panels. I don't like the colourway as much as when it was in the ball. It seems to look more grey when its knitted up but since grey is the "new Black" then maybe I shouldn't complain too much. Hoping to make some more progress on this over the next few days.

Kim Hargreaves Glee

This is the Kim Hargreaves Glee - finished apart from the sewing up. Its the bit I always hate. I've attached the shoulders and once I've sewn the collar to the back of the neck, I plan to put it in the washing machine and then get down to the task of sewing it up and finally finishing it. The weather has definitely turned colder these last couple of weeks so I'm keen to get it finished.

I have a phobia of fish. It is improving with age but when I was younger, I couldn't eat in a restaurant if they had fish in a tank unless it wasn't within my sight.

I managed to go snorkelling in Egypt a couple of years ago but did have to wear a full wet suit as I didn't want any of the fish to touch me. I was amazed and ecstatic that I managed to do this and I thought the fish were wonderful but still have a long way to go until I am fully comfortable about them.

Knitting withdrawal symptoms

no pictures today, as I haven't been knitting for well over a week. There is a reason for this as I think it extremely unnatural to go so long without knitting. I have just started a new job a couple of weeks ago as a financial adviser. Its a complete change of career for me and since I have never worked in banking or finance before, the training is intense. I have my first real big test on Tuesday when I am told whether I have worked sufficiently hard enough to pass the first client interview stage. I'm going to be doing lots of studying over the weekend and trying to perfect my skills. The interview takes about and hour and a half and the structure of it is over 3 pages long. I've only had a week to learn this stuff so my brain feels as if it is about to explode at the moment.

Keeping my fingers crossed that it all goes well on Tuesday and that I can get back to knitting by next weekend. I'm now on my 6th panel of the Lizard ridge blanket so I'll post some pictures next week to let you see how they are coming out.

My next project

I bought some more Tapestry from Rowan on Monday as I want to knit Sorrel from Rowan Magazine 40. Its in Colourway 175 and is a mix of light blue, grey, beige and cream. Hoping that it turns out as nice as my short row hat.

This should give me the inspiration I need to finish Glee!

Usually I am not so patient and start new projects straight away but having spent last week frogging a jumper that I knitted 18 months ago as I couldn't remember what I had done with the collar, I have learned my lesson.

Although I did start and finish one panel of the lizard ridge afghan from www.knitty.com Fall06 issue last night. I was using up my stash - honestly!! ( although I have now gone and ordered some more colourways of Kureyon to do some more panels)

I chose to do it in Ecru. I've discovered that I don't really like working with the Rowan Denim. There's no give in it and I keep splitting the yarn as I knit. Its looking good though so I'm ploughing on and I'll post pictures when its finished.

If anyone is thinking about buying direct from Kim - go do it. The kit was beautifully packaged in a box and tissue paper and it contains everything you need (apart from needles) to complete the project. I was most impressed and will definitely buy some more kits from her website.

Short Row Hat

I did this pattern last winter after it appeared in Interweave Knits with wool from curiousyarns but I thought the coulour changes were too short so when I saw Rowan Tapestry, I decided to give it another go.

I love the way this one has turned out and can't wait for the winter so that I can start wearing it.

Conquered Second Sock Syndrome

I finally did it - I finished my second sock. I have no idea why I suffered SSS as I liked both this pattern and wool but for some reason I just couldn't get the motivation together to finish the second one. I only managed to finish this we were stuck on the approach to the San Gotthard tunnel for an hour and half - figured I might as well do something to pass the time.

After finishing the socks, I used the rest of the wool to make a baby hat and mitts - waste not want not as my mother used to say.

Stash and baby things

Been trying to use up some of my stash and so have been knitting some baby things. They are always useful to have as everyone seems to be announcing they are pregnant at the moment. I don't think my needles can keep up.

These two are Debbie Bliss knits. I got the yarn for a bargain price from Coldspring Mills last summer and have just been trying to decide what to do with it. The lilac yarn was sold as double knitting but after some deliberating, I came to the conclusion that it was baby cashmerino - its so beautifully soft and feels completely different from the pink cardie which has a much more rough, hardwearing feel.

Now I just need to hope that everyone has girls!

Cobweb Lace Baby Blanket

Been too busy knitting the cobweb lace baby blanket to do any posting. Have finally finished and got it blocked yesterday. It looks fantastic - even if I say so myself. It's so delicate and floaty. Its hard to imagine the finished project when you are knitting this as the real beauty only comes out when you block it.

It's been difficult to try and capture the full blanket so I've posted a couple of pictures of different sections so that you can see the pattern more clearly. I especially love the pointy scalloped edging.

I've still got the matching jacket and bonnet to do but think that I'll finish some other projects before starting those.

I can crochet.....at last

Attended a beginners crochet class in John Lewis, Newcastle today. I have wanted to try crochet for ages but no matter how many books I read, websites I tried, etc I just couldn't get the hang of holding the hook.

Thankfully the class sorted it all out for me and I can now crochet. We learned how to chain, double crochet and treble crochet. We all crocheted flowers at the class (although I still have to sew mine up so haven't included any pictures.

I bought a couple of books, Erika Knight's Essentail Crochet and Carol Meldrum's Easy Crocheted Accessories (Carol took the class).

The class has given me the courage to start a crochet belt kit that I bought last year from Angel Yarns done with South West Trading Oasis. Its going fairly fast - probably much faster than knitting. Its all treble crochet so an easy project to get started with.

I don't think the crochet will ever take over from knitting but its been something that I wanted to know how to do either because a lot of knitting patterns have some crochet edgings or because I keep seeing stunning accessories which are crocheted. At least now I can give those patterns a go.

Baby Cardigan

Trying to use up some of my stash so knitted this baby cardigan from Interweave Knits using some Debbie Bliss Merino DK that I bought from Coldspring Mills last year. This is the second one of these I have knitted and thankfully I can now say I have cleared out some wool.

I really want to get rid of some of my stash before buying some more stuff. Hence the reason why I am knitting things where I've been hoarding the yarn for years.

Colinette Perugino Throw

My parents didn't know what to get me for Christmas so I asked them to buy me the kit for the Perugino throw from Colinette. I choose the Latte colourway as I want to decorate the spare room in pastel pinks and green - (when I come into some spare cash).

The throw is all completed but I still haven't decorated the bedroom. At lease the walls are already green (although a disgusting shade) so it does kind of go. Eventually the throw will adorn the bottom of the bed but for the moment its been relegated to covering the chair.

Second Sock Syndrome

I'm suffering with this sock. The pattern is from Interweave Knits. I've completed one and although I really like it, I can't face doing the second one. It does look an odd shape when its finished - the foot looks massive compared to the leg (I've only got size 5 feet but these look like clown's socks) but it all seems to sort itself out when you put it on.

It's sitting under my coffee table in a pencil case with all the wool and dpn's just waiting for its partner to appear. Maybe someday I'll get round to that second sock.

Following on from the baby blanket, I have finally found inspiration to start the cobweb lace baby shawl that I bought 16 years ago. I've never been confident enough to start it and I know its going to take a long time to finish it. I plan to do a bit while completing other projects. So far I have managed to complete about one side of the edging - only another 70 scallop patterns to go to finish the edging and then its on to the main body. It may take me another 16 years to finish it. I've never knitted anything quite so intricate and fiddly in my entire life.

Baby Blanket

I have just completed a baby blanket. This was a kit that I purchased from www.knittingtogo.com and is called the maternity blanket. I've knitted a few baby blankets in the past but the pattern and colours on this one made me want to try it. I have normally knitted in white or neutral colours so this one was quite different. The pattern was really easy - its all garter stitch with some K2Togs. The only difficult part is picking up the stitches to start each new square.
